Top 10 Tips to Avoid and Secure your PC Against Malware!

Security should be anyone's first and top priority when they buy a new PC. Any PC that connects to the Internet regularly, downloads and installs software, and uses removable media devices is likely to be insecure and be infected by malware - viruses, trojans, worms, spyware and adware.

Follow the tips below to help keep your computer safe and sound. I recommend first taking a look directly at the last step.

1. Download - of course - an Antivirus Software!

Bitdefender is the best of all. Then comes Kaspersky. Do not install more than one virus removal software on a single PC - they both will conflict with each other and slow down your machine.

2. Use Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free

Download and install Malwarebytes Anti-Malware Free ALONG with another antivirus software. It's an assistant to your current antivirus. It is a lightning fast handy tool to eliminate malware from your PC.

3. Stop Downloading Junk!

Blinking cursors, themes, keygens, cracks, so-called hacking programs, torrent files and bla bla bla might seem to be good and safe, but in reality they aren't.

4. Stop Opening Suspicious Emails

Don't even touch them - throw them off the window right away! If an email offers you to 'get your free cash balance now!' or that 'you have been qualified for...,' mark them as junk or phishing scam.

5. Check a Website's Rep Before Visiting

If a website looks suspicious, check it's reputation and popularity online. If it's a 'Hack Forums' website or even a 'Free Cracked Software,' you know that your PC would be in great trouble if you visit them.

If in case a virus has already got the path to enter your PC, follow these tips:

6. Can't Download an Antivirus?

If a nasty virus is denying you to download an antivirus or connect to the Internet, reboot Windows into 'Safe Mode with Networking.' This prevents many infected drivers and system files from being loaded, so check if you can download an antivirus. If you can do so, follow the first step and the second step.

7. Run System Restore

Click on Start > All Programs > Accessories > System Tools > System Restore. Choose a date to restore your PC to and run System Restore. It might take some time (even up to an hour) depending on what date you've selected.

8. Run a Full System Scan

No matter how much time it takes to finish its work, perform a complete system scan by your antivirus. Do not interrupt it.

9. Update your Antivirus

Updating antivirus definitions can help A LOT. Many times an antivirus can't find a virus because its definitions aren't updated. Update your antivirus definitions and scan your Windows again.

BEFORE PERFORMING THIS STEP, BACKUP YOUR WINDOWS REGISTRY AND FILES.

10. Remove an Infection Manually

If you know what particular program is causing the problem that is part of the malware, follow the steps below:

a. Download Autoruns for Windows and extract the file. Make sure to extract it to C:\Autoruns.
b. Reboot your PC into Safe Mode by keep pressing the F8 key while your PC is being restarted. This way the file that contains the malware would not be loaded.
c. Double click on the autoruns.exe in C:\Autoruns.
d. Now click on the Options menu.
e. Enable the following options: Include Empty Locations, Verify Code Signatures, Hide Signed Microsoft Entries.
f. Press F5 on your keyboard to create a list of startup entries.
g. You'll see 8 different tabs and will probably find the malware associated entry under the Services or Logon tab (but scan through all the tabs if you don't find it in the Services or Logon tab.) Some malware programs conceal themselves as programs with trustworthy names, so you should be pretty sure of what entry is the malware. You'll find the entry name under the Image Path column.
h. Once you're sure of what entry is the malware, right click and delete it.
i. Once the entry has been deleted, it won't again start at boot up so delete the file if you know its path in Windows Explorer. Don't forget to delete it from the Recycle Bin too.

If you can't see the file, it might be hidden. To view hidden files in Windows Explorer, go to Control Panel and click on Appearance and Personalization. In the Folder Options, click on Show hidden files and folders. Uncheck the options 'Hide extensions for known files types' and 'Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)' and click OK. Now go to step 10 (i) again.

j. Now reboot Windows normally and you'll get to know that the malware has been eliminated. If it isn't you've probably done something wrong or deleted the wrong entry.

Windows 7/Vista Running Slow? Try These 10+ Tricks!

The craze for Windows Vista and 7 is now gone but when it was released, many of you, excitedly, might have upgraded to Windows 7/Vista without even noticing that your PC could not support its heavy system requirements. If whenever you start off your PC and it takes centuries to load, don't worry, don't fling it off the window. Instead, follow these tips!

Note: Some of the following tips may work for Windows 7 only.

1. Turn off Windows Aero

Windows Aero is beautiful, but you have to do it if your PC's running slow. Right click on the desktop > Personalize, and from the Basic and High Contrast Themes panel, choose any theme.

2. Disable Services and Startup Items

Click on the Start Orb, type in 'msconfig,' go to the Services tab, and uncheck the services which you want to disable. Now go to the Startup tab, and uncheck the startup items that you want to keep from loading when the computer starts.

3. Run Disk Cleanup

Click on the Start Orb, type in 'disk cleanup,' and open the Disk Cleanup application. Now select the drives that you want to cleanup. Windows will scan for what needs to be thrown into the Recycle Bin. Now before proceeding, if you're using Windows 7, click on the 'Clean up system files.' Now again select the drives you wish to cleanup. Check the files you want to remove, and click OK.

4. Defragment your Disks

From the Start menu, click on All Programs > Accessories > System Tools, and open the Disk Defragmenter. Analyze your PC volumes and start defragmenting them. This progress might take up to an hour but it helps Windows to work more efficiently.

5. Uninstall Heavy Software

Go to the Control Panel, and from the Programs panel, click on Uninstall a Program. Choose which software/apps you want to uninstall. Remove the Windows Sidebar. Kick out any extra themes/templates that you've installed - because, first comes performance and then graphics.

6. Delete Temporary Files

From the Start menu search for '%temp%.' You'll be presented with two folders with a whole lot of files and folders. Delete everything from each of them. Don't forget to delete everything from your Recycle Bin, too.

7. Explore and Delete!

You really don't know what rubbish you've gathered in your PC! Just open the Windows Explorer and scan through folders. Found anything simply being worth to go into the Recycle Bin? Yes, you will!

8. Install a new RAM card

Now this costs and takes time - but you can also borrow one from a friend or a family member. This will actually BOOST your PC's speed and performance!

9. Run a Virus Scan

Sometimes it's nothing except a creepy virus that's living in your Windows and denying it to work efficiently. Download an antivirus software - there're plenty in the market available for free - and run a full system scan. Avoid using removable media devices after doing so.

10. Run Windows Update

While millions of people are against this option (even me), I only suggest using it because it can tell you if any of your drivers are out-of-date. Also, install a driver updater and run scans every week.

11. Download and Install CCleaner

CCleaner is a great optimization and cleaning tool for speeding up your Windows PC. Download it here to make your PC faster and more secure. It's easy to use and does not take much hard drive space. I recommend not to uninstall it after performing a scan.

If none of the above tips work for you, consider repairing your PC hardware or perform a service. Still no luck? Backup your data, and reinstall Windows once you know that the problem would be gone if you do so.

7 Things You Didn't Know About Windows 7!

Windows 7 is the second latest Windows released and now it's got a bit older. But if you've recently upgraded to Windows 7 you'll notice that it's fairly different from the previous versions of Windows. Perhaps you want to play with it a little bit and explore the exciting new features to make the most out of your Windows!

Here is a list of things which you  probably don't know yet:

1. Shake Desktop Windows!

I'd love to start the list by telling you this cute feature. If you've too many open windows messing up your desktop, this little tip can help you. Go to the window that you want to keep open, click and hold on the title bar of that window. 'Shake' or quickly move your mouse from left to right (or vice versa) and all other open windows will be minimized to the taskbar! Do the same trick to restore those windows.

2. Rename More Than One File/Folder at Once!

This little great new feature in Windows 7 is a really handy one. If you have two or more files or folders and want them to have the same name, select them and press the F2 key. Once done, you'll only need to rename one file/folder and the others one would be renamed automatically having ordered numbers.

3. Change the Quality of Text

You can change the overall quality of text by using the Windows ClearType Text Tuner. Do this by clicking on the Start Button and searching for 'cttune.exe.'

4. Zoom In and Out Easily!

You might be aware of pressing CTRL and then the + or - on your keyboard to zoom in or out in your browser, but using the same trick and replacing the CTRL button with the Windows key instead will open the Magnifier and zoom in the desktop.

5. Windows 7 Window Docking

Press and hold the title bar of the window that you want to be docked, and move your mouse to the left or right of the screen. The window will be shifted to the half left/right of the screen.

6. Easily Share Content Between PCs in your Home!

'Homegroup' is another great feature which helps us to seamlessly share content with other PCs in our home! Homegroup DOES NOT require Bluetooth to be turned on. For more info on how to use it, click here.

7. Aero Peek

Aero Peek is another small feature for navigating a screen which is cluttered with windows. Many of you've already noticed this, but if you're the one who's left, hover over the button at the bottom right corner of the desktop, click on the button if you want to switch to the desktop.
